The School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) of Tsinghua University was founded in 1994, and has five undergraduate programs (Electronic Information Science and Technology, Microelectronics Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Automation and Software Engineering) and all have the right to confer bachelor's degree. The SIST offers six first-level disciplines, which are Electronic Science and Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering and Cyberspace Security, as well as 22 second-level disciplines. All first-level disciplines have the right to confer master's and doctoral degrees.
In 2003, in order to meet the needs of society for the cultivation of talents with the characteristics of solid basis, wide caliber, high quality, diversification and innovation, and to strengthen students’ foundation of mathematics and information, under the guidance of the university, the SIST began to pilot the implementation of undergraduate enrollment according to majors and the cultivation according to information categories. In accordance with the unified requirements of the SIST, all undergraduate majors of the SIST have formulated the training program of information category, strengthened the foundation of mathematics and natural science, and built the platform course system of information category of the public foundation of various disciplines. All lower grade students in each major pursue a common or similar academic program, while the instructional teaching plans of the higher grades reflect the characteristics of their respective majors, which are selected by students under the guidance of teachers. At the same time, a professional core curriculum system has been constructed in the training program of information category. Moreover, the integration and reorganization of courses according to postgraduate first-level disciplines have broadened the content of undergraduate majors and activated the direction of undergraduate majors.
In 2017, with the further reform of the national college entrance examination enrollment system, Tsinghua University decided to fully implement the recruitment and cultivation of undergraduates by category. According to the deployment of the university, the SIST enrolls students according to the following 3 categories: electronic information, computer and automation. The majors in electronic information category cultivation in the university are electronic information science and technology, microelectronic science and engineering, and biomedical engineering. The majors in computer category cultivation in the university are computer science and technology, software engineering, computer science experimental class and artificial intelligence class. The majors in automation cultivation in the university are automation and information management and information system.
By the end of 2023, the SIST had developed 13 national top-quality courses, 10 Beijing top-quality courses, 26 courses rated as national first-class undergraduate courses, 8 courses as benchmark courses in Tsinghua University, and 41 courses as top-quality courses (undergraduates) in Tsinghua University. The departments under the SIST have won 18 national teaching achievement awards, including 2 grand prizes, 2 first prizes, 13 second prizes and 1 excellent prize; 51 teaching achievement awards in Beijing, including 1 bureau-level award of Beijing Higher Education Bureau, 33 first prizes and 17 second prizes. Two professors have won the National Distinguished Teacher Award, 11 have won the Beijing Distinguished Teacher Award, and two have won the Beijing Young Teacher Award. There are two national experimental teaching demonstration centers of institutes of higher education, one national virtual simulation experimental teaching center and one Beijing experimental teaching demonstration center of institutes of higher education.
