On November 22, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering released the list of new academicians elected in 2023. Professor Hu Shimin of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) of Tsinghua University was elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Hu Shimin, born in September 1968, is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University. He obtained a bachelor's degree in computational mathematics and applied software from the Department of Mathematics of Jilin University in 1990, and a master's degree and a doctor's degree in applied mathematics from the Department of Mathematics of Zhejiang University in 1993 and 1996 respectively. Since June 1996, Professor Hu has been working in the Department of Computer Science and Technology in Tsinghua University. He is Winner of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and academic leader of innovative groups. He is currently Vice Chairman of the China Computer Federation, Executive Director of ACM SIGGRAPH, and President of the ASIA Graphics Association.
Professor Hu has been engaged in the teaching and research of computer graphics, geometric computing and artificial intelligence for a long time, and has made systematic contributions to the theory, method and application research of intelligent processing of visual media. Professor Hu’s achievements have been applied to the digital reconstruction of process plants and the construction of large-scale street view systems, and the development of the first space-ground collaborative mixed reality system in China's space station. He has innovatively put forward the idea of meta-operator fusion and the strategy of unified graph computing, developed and opened an autonomous deep learning framework “computing graph”, which effectively reduced the difficulty of operator optimization and the complexity of heterogeneous hardware adaptation, realizes the efficient adaptation of domestically produced CPU, GPU and AI chips, and significantly improves the training and reasoning efficiency of neural networks and large models while saving graphic memory.
Professor Hu has won a second prize of the National Natural Science Award, a second prize of the National Technological Invention Award and a second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and won the “Wang Xuan Award” of the China Computer Federation and the National Innovation Pioneering Award.(Source: SIST, Tsinghua University)
